Retiring the Colors - Destroying an Unserviceable Flag

Retiring the Colors - Destroying an Unserviceable Flag

On Thanksgiving, surrounded by family in Bishop, CA, we had a rare honor of retiring the Colors for the final time. Our cherished American Flag had finally been beaten to unserviceability by the harsh Owens Valley wind. In accordance with U.S. Law and Customs, we destroyed the Flag by burning. I took the opportunity to preserve the moment with my camera. I added this caption so that all who viewed this photograph would understand the context of the moment and know the respect I hold for the Flag and my Country.
Respectfully,
The Artist

"When a flag is so worn it is no longer fit to serve as a symbol of our country, it should be destroyed by burning in a dignified manner." - http://www.usa-flag-site.org/etiquette.shtml
